External Display? 1440p or 4k? 24" or 27" ? What would you suggest?

RWerksman, thanks again for your posts on tabletpcreview! I've posted a .reg file at the bottom of my blog post that folks can just download and double-click to install all the 3:2 aspect ratio resolutions without having to go through nonsense with the Intel driver installs...

How to prevent a closed type cover putting SP3 to sleep when docked?

Dude, welcome to the forums. While I can't help you with the sleep on lid-close behavior, I can address your concern with the DPI settings. Please check my dpi post for instructions on getting it to work nicely with your 1440P monitor (presumably it is a 27" model with ~109dpi?)...

New 3rd party dock in town

Neat product. A little more info here: http://etauro.com/en/productdisplay/dp-usb-charger-duc This picture is key: Instead of breaking out everything via one connector like the official dock, this has three. So what you're getting is a no-name USB 3.0 hub, a miniDP->extension, and a 12 power...

    A cheap backup pen

OP's review shows different thread pitch on the caps of the two pens. So if you interchange them you could ruin the threads and the cap might fall off in the future since it wouldn't be secure since they would be cross-threaded...

    Disable Hyperthreading?

Kozak, on your laptop, what was the performance or power consumption difference with HT on vs off. Also which generation of Intel CPU was it? On later generations, unless you have very specific workloads, you're unlikely to see much difference. If you do see a big difference, you should file a...

    Disable Hyperthreading?

How long do your Maya plugins execute for? I suspect that if you start Maya with the affinity settings to only use Processor 0 and Processor 2, for example, Maya will run great, but when it instantiates a separate process for a plugin, that process will be assigned to a processor by the OS. You...

    Disable Hyperthreading?

The answer to the OP question is "sort of". Skip down for the how to. On Ironlake and earlier Intel processors, disabling hyperthreading (HT)could indeed boost single-thread performance for some workloads. Microsoft Exchange server was on such workload. Also in certain old games that only...

    Secondary Monitor scaling

Here is a different approach to the multi-monitor dpi scaling issue: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/danchar/archive/2014/11/01/high-dpi-multi-mon-with-surface-pro-3-dpi-scaling-tweaks.aspx Once docked, just artificially set the tablet resolution to something MUCH lower than the native panel...

Mini display port on docking station

Tuchas, Some of the Belkin adapters available on ebay and even Amazon are actually cheap knock offs with inferior electronics. The genuine Belkin adapters are usually quite good. I've had rock solid results with the Surface brand adapters.

    SP3 (256) connecting to 4k TV

TommyLGrundy, this sounds like it could be an issue with the Intel Graphics driver that might be fixed with newer drivers. Can you try downloading the very latest driver HD Graphics 5000 driver in zip form...

External Display? 1440p or 4k? 24" or 27" ? What would you suggest?

Yeah the Dell IPS 4K panel is very nice. That or the 2560x1440 are both great choices.

Mini display port on docking station

Jamie Youngblood's post is spot on. FWIW, at home we have the Surface brand dock and the Surface brand mini-DisplayPort adapter hooked up to a $100 Asus monitor through an Amazon Basics $5 HDMI cable and it works like a champ. If you've tried a quality cable and a quality adapter, it sounds...

External Display? 1440p or 4k? 24" or 27" ? What would you suggest?

Yes, but it depends on whether you have the Surface screen at the same viewing distance as the 27" screen. If you use the SP3 close-up such that you can use the pen and touch, then the default settings of 150% scaling on the SP3 combined with 100% on the 27" works great. If you're like me and...

    Duplicate screen on Monitor 2560x1440

Gerard, On any Windows PC when you use the duplicate monitor mode, Windows chooses a lowest common denominator screen resolution such that both screen have the same resolution. In your case the Surface screen is 3:2 aspect ratio 2160x1440 while the desktop screen is 16:9 aspect ratio 2560x1440...

Solved SP3 multi-mon dpi scaling tweak

ChrisPanzer, I am probably misunderstanding what you're trying to do. Can you put your Surface back to factory default settings/resolution and take a screenshot or picture with your cellphone of exactly what is wrong? Better yet take the picture next to another machine where everything looks...

Solved SP3 multi-mon dpi scaling tweak

ChrisPanzer, Everyone's eyes are a little different. What resolution monitor do you typically use on a desktop, what size is the monitor and far away from your face is it? With these 3 pieces of info, it should be easy to match that experience on the Surface. All the "sweet spot" resolutions...

    2nd monitor via USB adapter

The DisplayLink docks are an economical way to add monitors to laptops and for the vast majority of folks work very well. Just like Greyfox mentioned, there are some issues that come up with specific configs, but there is great support at DisplayLink.com and Plugable.com (local Seattle company)...
