Can we talk about battery life? Microsoft says "up to 9 hours"

Probably about 1-1.5 hours. Playing any graphically intense video game will just rip through the battery as both your GPU and CPU will be running at full speed and constantly occupied. For less demanding games, like Diablo 3, Civilization V, and XCOM, I've gotten around 2-2.5 hours.

Can we talk about battery life? Microsoft says "up to 9 hours"

I generally get 6-7.5 hours of light use. I can push it up to maybe 8-8.5 if I turn battery saver mode on. This is assuming that the device is working normally, such as now after the latest updates. If Microsoft breaks something in an update, such as CPU clockspeed, I've gone down as low as 4-5...

Updated Firmware and Drivers - August 30, 2016

Glad that they finally fixed the CPU clock speed issue after almost a month with it.

Poll Surface Pro 4, a very expensive frustation

Does it "bug down" more than I'd expect? I'd say yes: I generally don't expect basic functions like sleep, wake, and CPU clockspeed variation to fail for months. Is it unusable? Far from it. Would I recommend the SP4 to a casual user? I don't think that I would due to Microsoft's poor quality...

I've Changed My Mind: The SP4 is Terrible

The highly variable responses here are what I was talking about: the device is good enough that it's a highly functional and amazing device but it can be incredibly frustrating when it doesn't work how it should depending on use. Hughlle doesn't use sleep so he wouldn't have run into the really...

I've Changed My Mind: The SP4 is Terrible

It is SO GOOD when it works the way it's supposed to, and there have been periods of time where this has been the case... but then an update makes this illusion crumble like a house of cards. Another annoying but not deal breaking problem that I'm not sure if it's been fixed or not but it's...

I've Changed My Mind: The SP4 is Terrible

Over the past 3 years, I've found myself often defending both the SP2 and now the SP4 among the plethora of threads complaining about issues such as automatically waking from sleep, battery drain, bleeding screens, and faulty keyboard ports. No more. This Anniversary Update has been kind of bad...

Solved SP4 wakes up EVERY single time

I just experienced a wake up on its own from hibernate where it was on in my bag and getting warm but didn't get past the BIOS or whatever the Surface with spinning dots screen is. Great, this problem is back. I think at this point, I can't recommend a Surface device to anyone... which is sad...

Possible bug-Anniv update SP4 and CPU

What I've always found interesting is that these bugs don't often show up on desktop so it's about Microsoft not doing some obvious testing on Surface Pros in particular. Like, why does my lock screen show a blue background instead of the image that I had selected every time it comes out of...

Possible bug-Anniv update SP4 and CPU

Having monitored my SP4 for a bit, it doesn't seem like it's draining battery as if it were constantly running at max speed. My unit doesn't get warm either (when nothing is actually using the CPU). It could be that this bug is mostly just misreporting the CPU speed. More testing required.

Possible bug-Anniv update SP4 and CPU

Well, after a few hibernates, it looks like I now have this bug. My Core i5 is now stuck at 2.47 GHz even after restart, and my battery is draining pretty fast. Definitely need a fix to this problem or else this won't be a very mobile device.

Possible bug-Anniv update SP4 and CPU

Not an issue on both my SP4 and my desktop. My desktop is an upgraded Win10 (ie. not a clean install).

    Anniversary Update

I'm liking the Windows Ink Workspace. Extensions for Edge (ie. AdBlock Plus) is a great upgrade. Seems like good small changes.

    Battery Drain While Plugged in

I'm not sure where it's stated anywhere that the included charger would be able to handle a full load and continue to charge the device. It would be nice, I guess, if it could charge under full load but I don't think you have any grounds to argue that there has been any kind of false...

    Battery Drain While Plugged in

The charger that comes with the SP4 is 36 W. The Core i5-6300U has an official TDP of 15 W but a boosted TDP of 25 W (Intel® Core™ i5-6300U Processor (3M Cache, up to 3.00 GHz) Specifications). Throw in SSD activity, the USB hub, LAN adaptor, and the integrated GPU (probably a big draw given...

That problem that microsoft just won't fix

I have not had an issue with sleep/hibernate since about January. You either have a defective device or you have some software installed that doesn't like sleep/hibernate and crashes the system on wake up. If you really want to test this, I would recommend doing a system reset and don't install...

    Idle CPU usage

When Windows 10 is first installed (or you reset/just started using a Win10 device), Windows does a ton of stuff in the background, such as indexing your files and scanning everything for viruses. I would give it a couple of days to settle down before you really look closely at your battery life.

Thinking of upgrading my SP3 to SP4 - a few questions...

You can have the virtual keyboard auto-pop up in desktop mode by going to Settings -> Devices -> Typing and toggling on the bottom option "Show the touch keyboard...." If you have never cleanly installed Win10 on this machine (ie. only upgraded it from Win 8.1), I would recommend doing the USB...

Thinking of upgrading my SP3 to SP4 - a few questions...

#1. I don't use tablet mode at all (even when being used as a tablet) so I turned off automatic switching and can't comment on it being in the wrong mode. #2. Early on, yes but, in the last ~4 months, basically never. This will probably vary a lot with what you have installed and have running...

A few questions about the Sp4

I opened the Twitch stream but it wasn't that interesting so I only let it play for 3 minutes on my i5/256 GB/8 GB on battery. It got a tiny bit warm, no fan, and I don't expect the fan to come on even after 10's of minutes because my CPU clockspeed was still in the 0.6-0.8 GHz range with only...
