Surface App shows all zeros(0) for serial number...

That's good to hear. It happens once on my SP3, but I always reboot twice after Windows update + Disk Cleanup + Disk Defrag

Make sure you are on the latest Windows updates for windows 10

Never had this issue. Mine isn't lit when Bluetooth or WiFi are on

Surface Pro 4 i7-6650U power throttling issue?

I would think that's the case. Since it's skylake you can go 2 GHz or even its base clock 2.2 GHz limit without power issues.

Surface Pro 4 i7-6650U power throttling issue?

It's just that the Skylake architecture is not efficient enough to sustain full CPU and GPU load to fit the 15W TDP. However , if Intel specified this with a 28 W indefinite TDP like those on the CPUs with iris 550 GPU, there wouldn't be power throttling at all.

Surface Pro 4 i7-6650U power throttling issue?

See my post #12. It's not Microsoft but Intel rather. Just download intel power gadget, max the CPU with handbrake transcoding and you should see that the whole 15 W TDP is gobbled up by CPU alone. Throw in the GPU then you've got the power throttling mess.

Surface Pro 4 i7-6650U power throttling issue?

Cerif27, Power throttling only arises when game needs a lot of high CPU frequency and power like online FPS games such as CS GO, BF3/4 multiplayer, Crysis 3 multiplayer, GTA 5. Otherwise, performance should be very close to unthrottled performance when games don't need high CPU frequency/power.

turns on in bag during sleep??

It might be that something capacitive is rubbing on the windows button, waking the sp3 up. I suggest to try putting electrical tape on top of it and see if surface will wake up again.

Surface Pro 4 i7-6650U power throttling issue?

As long as that any kind of throttling doesn't kick in, it shouldn't harm the device. It might harm the battery though since the heat located throughout the back unlike the SP3 where heat is only concentrated on the right side of the surface.

Wow its getting hot - heat issues to a science

Been running IE 11 since its iteration. No issues with heat at all. You can't even hear the fans even if you put your ears directly to the right side of the SP3

Surface Pro 4 i7-6650U power throttling issue?

You can play a CPU heavy driven game like CS GO. Make sure to monitor the GPU usage, GPU frequency, CPU usage and CPU frequency. GPU frequency when it's not throttling must be between 900 MHz to 1 GHz while CPU frequency must always be above 2.7 GHz (for the i7 model) during gaming. If you see a...

    Should I exchange my SP4 i5 for a SP4 i7? DOES IT HEAT UP LIKE THE SP3?!

Based on information all over the net, i7 and i5 temperatures are very close. However, i7 power throttles (not thermal throttle) ONLY when GPU and CPU are loaded (i.e. video games). i7 SP4 will NOT throttle during CPU video encode and will keep the 3.2 GHz boost indefinitely. Once the Iris GPU...

Surface Pro 4 i7-6650U power throttling issue?

I wouldn't think that's the case. If that's so, how come on the original video, CPU and GPU throttle right away when CS GO is launched? But when the GPU is offloaded, CPU turbo's right away to 3.2 GHz right after closing the games (with the back case still hot). If you look at SP3's case, the...

Surface Pro 4 i7-6650U power throttling issue?

I don't know. I never used Intel XTU myself. I monitored my CPU and GPU frequency using Intel Power Gadget during gaming. If there's a GPU frequency and even TDP limit then that would be a good compromise especially when the game needs those high CPU clocks so that it won't stutter.

Surface Pro 4 i7-6650U power throttling issue?

For those who own the SP4 i7, if you guys can share information regarding power throttling and gaming lag on CPU intensive games it would be helpful. Also, if there's a way to keep the GPU frequency to 800MHz on high CPU usage games, it would sure help the CPU keep the turbo boost. I recorded...

Surface Pro 4 i7-6650U power throttling issue?

He is showing what most casual users do if they want to get high performance. Of course there are more extreme ways to get higher benchmarks/performance by undervolting etc. On some videos, power throttling i7 is still faster in gaming than i5 that power throttles less because many games are...

Surface Pro 4 i7-6650U power throttling issue?

I am not familiar with those mobile CPU settings. I do know that undervolting kills sleep and connected standby because during sleep/connected standby, CPU is put to C7 sleep state (maybe C8 in skylake chips) which is the lowest voltage applied to CPU. If you undervolt, you tell a specific CPU...

Surface Pro 4 i7-6650U power throttling issue?

Agree too. Not much of a gamer myself, but not throttling (i.e. CPU package power consumption doesn't go below 15 Watts) is a good bonus for me. I would gather more responses and data, and if this Core i7 power throttling issue is widespread across many users, I would let him know to avoid the...

Surface Pro 4 i7-6650U power throttling issue?

I might also add that undervolting using Intel XTU isn't a good solution to this because it pretty much kills sleep and connected standby. Also, no casual people (not tinkerers) would even dare to undervolt the CPU.

Surface Pro 4 i7-6650U power throttling issue?

I have a friend who wants to get the Surface Pro 4 i7 model after seeing my SP3 i5 without throttling issues when running CPU & GPU intensive games. However, while browsing on YouTube to look for SP4 i7 gaming performance, I saw a video that shows how SP4 throttles to equal or worse than Core M3...
