SkyDrive is broken. There's a lot of talk on it on Microsoft support sites. Can you see the files if you access them directly on the SkyDrive website? If so, then you're having the same kind of issues that many people are - the app is very bad.

I'd be wary of combining various cloud storage. But then I've been stung with various data losses over the years. One thing I would say from experience is that cloud storage isn't a backup solution. If you value your data you should have a proper backup solution in place.

Might depend on consumer laws where you are. It's common for those laws to allow replacement with a used/reconditioned device as long as it's of the same quality. That replacement clearly falls short of that. Was it a retailer that sent out the replacement, or direct from Microsoft?

First thing is to see where the fault lies. Connect the disk to another computer - does it work there? Connect another disk/thumbdrive to the Surface - does it show up?

How are you connecting the Surface to the internet? Could it be that you're behind a proxy/firewall/other device that is restricting access to https sites? That'd be my first thought. Have a search around Microsoft's support forums - SkyDrive is very broken for a helluva lot of folk. There's many, many threads about SkyDrive reporting insufficient space and even more about the synchronization being broken and online/offline settings being reset after each reboot. It's a mess...

Am I missing something, or is there no way to search for an event in the Calendar app? The universal Search doesn't find any events. The same's also true of calendars on Outlook.com - there's no option to search... Surely there must be? Or do I have to use Outlook for that?

Just use the Search function in the Store? At the top right of the screen there should be a Search box? And no, no third-party apps can be installed.

Depends what you do with your laptop. My Surface has replaced my laptop for browsing, Office that kind of thing. But I still have to use the laptop for certain tasks.
