I still need to exchange my SP2, now that I'm convinced my video issues are hardware related (happens on Ubuntu too). I'm wondering if I should wait until Patch Tuesday (the 14th) to see if the new firmware fixes it. Which gives me a single day of cushion for the Best Buy holiday return policy...

Booted mine into Ubuntu today and color banding is still present, so it's a hardware or firmware problem. It's going back. Now that the SP2 is shipping with a 4300u processor, I guess I'll wait so I can confirm I'll get one of those.

what's the lot number if I may ask?

those with the 4300u, any indication on the packaging: box, labels etc. that it had a different SKU or part #?

Not sure why it took so long for me to think of this :o, but I'm going to create and boot it from an Ubuntu USB distro. If the color is fine I'll keep it and wait for MS to get their act together, if not, back it goes to Best Buy.

I really want to like it, but the 8-bit-like color gamut mine has is a drag. I'm a bit apprehensive to exchange it because I'm afraid something else will be broken on that one. ;)

Hmmm, interesting. Well, it's happening in all the legacy and Metro apps I've tried. Oddly I don't think it's happening on my Samsung 500T which is also on 8.1. So it may be the higher DPI of the Surface Pro 2.
