Today an update was offered: System Hardware Update - ‎2014-‎03-‎11 Download size: 205 KB You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect. Update type: Important These updates are released by PC manufacturers to help improve the stability and performance of PC...

Would This Be Possible.. Or Practical?

Hmm, I vaguely remember learning years ago that rechargeable batteries lose capacity more quickly when new, then the rate of loss "flattens out", settling in to a slow decline until near EOL, and then can "die" quickly. Of course, battery formulation technologies have evolved like so many other...

Stuck Shift, Ctrl and Alt Keys - Type Cover Keyboard

Seeing that you're new to this community--and it is a very informative place--it's just one of those several annoying, vexing little problems frequently mentioned, and should I say mentioned repeatedly? But that is decidedly the case. My sense is that many are convinced MS is not too worked up...

    Battery wear

The "full charge capacity" given by the `powercfg /batteryreport` utility (I'm assuming that's the number we're talking about), does vary quite a bit, though I've never been able to figure out how it's calculated. Nonetheless, it's been as high as 42,221 mWh, and the low point 40,932 mWh...

Do ALL SP2s suffer from hi CPU utilization when idle due to faulty audio drivers?

That works, or use one of the menu items to do the same thing. Some have reported this "trick" does not always work. I think the short "nap" works for the the mSD related startup issue, maybe not as reliably for random CPU spinning. Last couple of weeks I've seen the non-startup CPU 25% rate...

    March Firmware Update is......back!

In my case this is what Windows Update says: System Firmware Update - ‎3/‎11/‎2014 Installation date: ‎2014-‎03-‎12 11:19 Installation status: Succeeded Update type: Important These updates are released by PC manufacturers to help improve the stability and performance of PC hardware...

    March Firmware Update is......back!

What a mixed bag this FW update business has been for SP2 owners. Just checked my own SP2 history. Apparently I received the March FW and installed it Mar 12. Can't say I've experienced further damage, nor has anything improved substantially. Well the Intel config thing is OK, but hasn't...

Has anyone here tried Linux or OS X on their device?

The "isolation" of the VM would be a problem since I've been relying on the connection between the VM and host, as well as the VM and the internet, and of course the host and the internet too. So yes, that's a more complicated setup to organize. How well I know about the frustrations of...

March FW update failed - doesn't come back

Ah, SP2 owners notice more, demand more performance. Could be. Connected standby would be a nice feature. Ooh, a far braver soul than I...

Has anyone here tried Linux or OS X on their device?

Pretty much what I understood. Virtual Box may work differently than Hyper-V--which seems a bit more complicated than VBox. Anyway, while it could be possible to assign static IP, the router would need to accept the virtual interface address. I couldn't get it to work with DHCP, but a "nailed...

March FW update failed - doesn't come back

Not quite sure I understand. If it's the same hardware, wouldn't the Marvell WiFi be as good (or bad) in the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2? If so, I'd expect MS would be getting a lot of complaints about WiFi performance. What would keep MS from using a better adapter? Surely there are better...

Has anyone here tried Linux or OS X on their device?

Even after a couple of months using Hyper-V, effect on battery life is hard to determine--there are so many variables to take into account. Furthermore, making a head-to-head comparison with/without HV, or the battery power consumed by the VM vs. OS booted from its own partition, gets caught up...

Has anyone here tried Linux or OS X on their device?

Pretty much that's it. Worth noting that after activating Hyper-V, TaskManager will show a constant CPU speed of 2.49 GHz. Don't know if that's just a readout error or if CPU speed is not changing as normally would. Also, I'd set the Hyper-V service to start manually. No point running it if...

Has anyone here tried Linux or OS X on their device?

ATM I've got FBSD running in a VM, this browser (Firefox), and a few other processes under Win8.1, and according to Task Manager ~32% of RAM is used, or 2.6GB out of 8GB on this SP2. So 4GB RAM should be enough to run at least 1 VM without too much strain. Factors other than RAM could affect...

Has anyone here tried Linux or OS X on their device?

Like al2fast I've used VM's with my SP2, only in my case I've made quite a bit of use of this option. You probably know about Hyper-V--it's included with Win8.1 Pro. I've successfully run Linux and especially FreeBSD in Hyper-V VMs. The latter is handy since FBSD 10.0 is released in VHD...

March FW update failed - doesn't come back

I know quite a few people working in the software industry, including a number who've been in QA. It's often a struggle to maintain quality under pressure to get releases out the door, dealing with managers who don't understand the engineering challenges and spending a lot of time dealing with...

March FW update failed - doesn't come back

Could be useful, are there instructions? It is an old custom--using customers as beta testers. It was a real problem back in the 90's. Still have old versions of Photoshop (v2.0) that were quite buggy and incomplete, but at the time cost a bundle anyway. I understand new products may not...

One thing I would like to see!

Curious, are you dual-booting Win8.1/Linux on an SP2? I've been using Hyper-V for Linux and FreeBSD, but of course inside a VM the host's drivers aren't visible. Running these OS in VM is very handy for many tasks, and seems easier to set up than the dual-booting alternative.

WiFi Won't Stay Connected or Randomly Becomes "Limited"

It's evening here, and internet connection is getting flaky again. I have my old router hooked up to the modem at a distant location, down in a corner of the basement. Even so, I can easily log on to the router/gateway despite the weak signal strength. Instructing the router to ping an...

A Little Poll: Are You A Power Cover Person??

Try here: Buy Surface Power Cover - Microsoft Store It doesn't give all details, but the key layout looks just like the TC2. I'd assume the same functions, but some may be not be obvious. Or maybe they just recycled the TC2 image, and not showing a picture of the real PC layout.
