It's easier to plug in and not mess with cables and it has 4 USB ports. I would not say it is a necessity by any means and it is rather pricey. I just decided to go all in and buy myself a second xmas present (got my SP2 a month ago). I can say it is very well made and feels sturdy.

If you're talking to me, what is different is being able to sit at a desk with a full size mouse, monitor and keyboard. I bought a SP2 to replace my desktop (mb died) and it has not let me down.
