Only thing to be aware of is that on mine at least, it is the default for it to automatically arrange things for you, which you can't alter. So when you create a new empty map, before doing anything else, click on the topic button in the menu bar, and select layout, and then chose free-form.

I've used an sp3 and sp4 at university for the past 3 years and have never had a single reason to consider a battery pack. Then again, I used mine purely for work, I imagine many want to use it frequently for Facebook, games etc.

Welcome to the forum. First thing to try is removing the nib (just pull it out with teeth, pliersm or whatever takes your fancy) and putting it back in again. I assume you've tried taking the abttery out and putting it back in as well.

I just don't see why someone would bother messing about with a fresh install of windows. This isn't some Acer computer chock a' block full of bloatware. That's one of the reasons that I love surface products. The worst you'll experience is an advert for candy crush in the start menu.

Maybe just return it for replacement like most people do when they get a machine which offers issues nobody else seems to face.
